While chikan work goes as far back as the early 3rd century BC it was Noor Jahan the wife of Mughal emperor Jehangir who truly popularised this form of embroidery by introducing the Persian art in India in the 17th century. After the downfall of the Mughal Empire chikankari artisans spread all over India but Lucknow remained the main centre. The Lucknow chikankari technique involves block printing the design on to cloth using indigo dyes. Then comes the embroidery process with needlework tracing the ink patterns. Available in one classic colourway.
A diverse, captivating collection of embroideries, prints and weaves.
Travelling and collecting have always been at the heart of the William Yeoward story and have provided us with the most diverse sources of inspiration over the years. The Lustleigh Print design feels very British but with an exotic twist and is the starting point for this collection, reminding us that all journeys start at home. Exquisite embroideries bought in Lucknow, northern India, and beautiful hand-loomed striped fabrics found in Coimbatore in south eastern India add layers of exotic interest. Stunning chenille weaves from Anatolia, Ikat patterns and Navajo blanket designs from the Americas complete the look. The combination of all these provides us with collections that are imbued with a rich sense of sophistication, handcrafted artisanal skill and timeless beauty.
